How To Deal With Any Incompetent Jerk, According To Louise Carnachan

Examine your own motives. Is the person truly incompetent, or do you not like them and want them gone? If that’s the case, then deal with your emotions but don’t try to push someone out by labeling them incompetent.’

Make a realistic assessment regarding the degree of control you actually have in the situation. What you always have control over are your actions and reactions. Unless you are that person’s boss, you don’t have the authority to fire them.’

Have some empathy for the person who’s struggling. Give feedback and/or offer help; don’t gossip behind their back. It’s not helpful and often causes more damage.’

Tell someone who is able to make a difference. If the incompetent’s actions (or lack of action) are dangerous, illegal, fraudulent, or costly, you need to take action by alerting those with authority.’

Do what you can to make a positive difference but know where the line is that signals it’s time to get out. An incompetent colleague is easier to bear than an incompetent boss, but if the situation becomes intolerable, it’s time to consider other employment options.’
