People are people. They are not things. And They deserve to be treated as human beings.
Do not deal with them as though you are dealing with things. In his book Primary Greatness: The 12 Levers of Success, Stephen Covey writes, 'We can't deal with people as though we're dealing with things. We can be efficient with things, but we need to be effective with people. ... If you go fast with people, you'll make very slow progress. You won't hear what they are really telling you. You won't understand what a win his for them. If you go slowly and get deeply into win-win thinking, you'll find that, in the long run, it's faster to get commitment to the right resolution for both of you.''
So to get the best out of people, treat them differently. Why? Because we are different. We think differently. We work differently. We see things differently. And we see and process things differently.Be patient with people. If you really want to know them, do not push them too fast.
If you do, they are going to push back. And things can get really messy. And you do not want that to happen.
Respect them. Great leaders respect others. They don't demand respect; they work to get it. So if you want others to respect you, you must first send it out. And it takes humility to respect others, to put others first.
And if you can do it, the world is yours.
