6 Best Ways To Develop Yourself At Work

We Care Book Page

“The most valuable currency of any organization is the initiative and creativity of his members. Every leader has the solemn moral responsibility to develop these to the maximum in all his people. This the leader’s highest priority.”- W. Edwards Deming

The success of your organization depends on your brain power. They cannot survive without you. Organization without its people is nothing. But you have to develop your own growth strategy. Nobody is going to do it for you. It is your responsibility to grow yourself.

In order to develop yourself, you MUST first know who you are, what you want to achieve, how you plan to achieve it, and how long it will take you to achieve your goal.

Self-development starts with self-discovery. You can develop yourself only if you know who you are, only if you are ready to do whatever it takes to get results you want.

Let’s look at some strategies that will help you be the best at work:

Know what you want. It is easier to accomplish extraordinary things when you know what you want than when you don’t know what you want. It will guide you through the process. Whatever it is that you want to achieve, face it with courage. Don’t be timid. Be bold. There is talent in boldness. Remember, it will take time to get to where you want to be. Be patience.

Create learning opportunities for yourself. Even if your company doesn’t offer training and development opportunities, create one or two opportunities for yourself. First, check for what is relevant in your workplace, and develop a strategy to study it. Except you want to change your job, don,t waste your time to study what you cannot put to a good use. Keep upgrading your skills. Never stop learning. Take advantage of your company’s training programs, if they have one. As I said earlier, don’t let that be the obstacle standing in your way. Find a way to make yourself indispensable at work, and you will enjoy your work.

If possible, always ask for a challenging assignment. According to John C. Maxwell, “Confront your inadequacies and push your personal boundaries: it’s the surest way to grow, improve and expand the scope of your influences.”

Personal growth and development come from doing the tough things, not from doing boring and uninteresting things. If you really want to expand yourself, always ask for assignment that has the potential to stretch you.

Develop great relationships with your co-workers. You cannot succeed alone. You need people to help you succeed, and people need you to help them succeed. There is power in working together. There is weakness in working alone. To quote John C. Maxwell, “Every relationship in your organization will affect you one way or another. Those who do not increase you will inevitably decrease you.”

You cannot make everyone happy, but you can be a good person in your workplace. You will succeed very fast when people like to work with you. Help your colleagues when they need help. They will help you, too. According to John, “The better you are at surrounding yourself with people of high potential, the greater your chance for success.”

Most importantly, don’t play workplace politics. Stay away if you can. If you cannot, make sure you document your conversations with people.

Be a great team-player. You need a team to succeed at work. You can’t do it by yourself. You need people to take the journey with. To quote John Maxwell, “Team make you better than you are, multiply your value, enable you to do what you do best, allow you to help others to do their best, give you more time, provide you with companionship, help you fulfill the desires of your heart and compound your vision and effort.”

The above quote is a typical picture of a great team. The opposite is also possible. But it pays when you work with great people. You will always enjoy your work, you will always grow, and you will always want to be with them.

Be yourself. You cannot do anything if you are not true to yourself. No matter the circumstances, stick to who you are, and respect your values. Jim Rohn said, “Values were meant to be costly. If it doesn’t cost much, we probably wouldn’t appreciate the value.” Be yourself.

There is only one success in life: to be able to live your life. Christopher Morley put it this way, “There is only one success- to be able to live your life in your own way.”

Lots of people don’t know that they are the master of their lives. They don’t. Sad! If you master your life, you have mastered everything. If people control your life, you have lost everything. The ONLY way to control your life is to “be yourself.”

Finally. employers are looking for the best. Know who you are, never stop learning, and be yourself, you will succeed.
