It feels good to ace an interview. But it takes discipline to prepare for a job interview. Lots of us think that a job interview doesn’t require an intense preparation. It does. If you want to ace your interview, here are a few things you should do:

You must prepare for the interview.

In preparing for your job interview, it doesn’t mean you should read the whole books in your local library. It is important that you prepare for your interview. When you prepare for your interview, you will be in control of the interview process. You will have the ability to really communicate your strengths to the interviewer. Preparation boost your confidence level.

Before the interview, make sure you know who you are.

In finding out who you really are, ask yourself critical questions that will reveal the hidden side of you. Ask yourself: What am I good at? What are my strengths and weaknesses? How do I work? Interviewers will be happy when they find a candidate who really understand their company. Their primary reason for sitting with you is to find your interest in working for their company. If you study the company before the interview shows that you are really interested in working for them. And that is what the interviewers are looking for. To research the company, start with their Web site. Then proceed to their social media accounts or pages, such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter. Don’t forget to pay attention to what people are saying about the company. This will reveal to you how the company treats its customers, employees (past and present), and its stakeholders.

Make sure you learn about what they do.

When you learn about what the company does, it gives you an advantage over your competition. You will be able to speak their language effectively. If they sell products, learn about the products and their customers. Learn about who their competitors are.

Find out who is going to be interviewing you.

It pays to know something about the person who will be interviewing you for a job. It shows you are interested in the person. But be careful not to get yourself into a big trouble. If he or she find out that you have researched a lot about her or him, that could cost you your job or the interviewer, especially if the person you have researched is a key decision maker in the company. Apart from the personal problems, knowing something about your interviewers will help you to know how they work, think, and ask questions. Most importantly, if you know something about your interviewer, you will be in charge of the interview. You will be able to direct the interview to areas that are less controversial.

Make sure you prepare your own questions.

If you go into an interview without preparing your own questions, the interviewers will think that you are not interested in their company. The questions you designed will take the interviewers into your head. You must be ready to participate in the interview. You must be mentally ready. Your questions should speak to the following areas: number of hours per week, overtime, history of the company, with whom you will be working. Don’t talk about money when they haven’t hired you. It is dangerous.

Poor communication skills.

Employers are looking for a job candidate who can communicate (oral and written). very well. When a candidate is good at communicating his or her ideas across, it reduces misunderstanding between the receiver and the sender.

Lack of confidence.

When a job candidate lack confidence, it shows in how he or she presents his or herself. When the job candidate is timid, his or her potential employer will be scared to offer him or her a job. A job candidate who lack confidence is not what employers are looking for. Employers are looking for a job candidate who is brave and courageous. As Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe once said, “Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.”

Focus on money.

Money is important. But employers don’t even want to sit down and interview a job candidate whose primary reason for accepting the interview is to talk about money. Employers will talk about money later down the road, not in the beginning. Employers are looking for a candidate who will help them make money. They are not interested in a job candidate who is not interested in helping them to grow their companies. They are looking for givers, not takers.

Sometimes, when a job candidate made it through all the interview processes, the problem becomes the references that he or she gave the interviewer. Hiring managers or interviewers are not looking for people who cannot give a detailed account of the candidate they are interested in. Lack of experience.

Experience is everything. Hiring managers have no time to train the new hire. So when they (hiring managers) are recruiting for a position that requires a seasoned worker, a new university or college graduate has no chance. It doesn’t mean the candidate is bad, or performed badly during the interview; it means the candidate is not the right fit for the position.
