Before we begin, let’s define productivity. Productivity, according to http://www.businessdictionary.com is a measure of the efficiency of a person, machine, factory, system, etc., in converting inputs into useful outputs.
No matter how toxic a company is, people still want to give their best. They still want to make a difference in the organization. Sometimes is a hard thing to do. If you find yourself in such a situation, what would you do? Are you going to quit, or stay with the company to make things better?
Here are some strategies that will help you to increase your productivity:
You’ve got to be persistent.
In a difficult situation, persistent people always win the fight. If you want to win, you have to be persistent. You have to stay in the game when others have long gone. Whether it is in your home or at work, or in the society, you will always run into something that will put your character to test. In time of trouble, persistence will help navigate through the complex web of issues.
Set Personal and organizational goals.
It is important to have a goal, to have a strategy, to have a plan to deal with issues. Having a goal is like having a map to direct you to your right destination. A life without a plan is a life designed to fail. Make sure that your personal and organizational goals are in good relationship. In order words, make sure they align with each other. No matter how bad your organization may be, if you know where you are going to, the journey will not be exhausting, and you will enjoy the process. Mary Oliver said, “Tell me what it is you plan to do with your one wild and precious life.”
Have a great sense of humor.
In difficult times, it is hard to maintain a positive attitude. But if you can do it, you will always be a winner. No matter what you are facing in the office, always try to be happy. Talk to co-workers who have great attitudes toward difficult situations. Visit places that will make you laugh. Read great books penned by great authors. Importantly, reach out to great friends to share some funny stories about yourself, not about your boss or your co-workers. Stop taking yourself too seriously. Have fun! A good sense of humor is the best medicine. William Makepeace Thackeray said, “Good humor is one of the best articles of dress one can wear in the society.”
What about gratitude?
No matter what you are going through in life, always be grateful for what you have. Focus on what you have, not on what you don’t have. Be happy that you even have a job that is toxic. Because if you spend your entire life complaining about what is not working, instead of focusing on what is working, you are denying yourself the gift of time. In order words, you are wasting your time and energy. Gratitude will help you to clear up your mind. It will remove fear, doubts, negative thoughts, away from your mind. Gratitude is a cleaner and a builder. Marcus Tullius Cicero once said, “Gratitude is not only the greatest virtues, but the parent of all others.” To add to that, Henry Van Dyke said: “Be glad of life because it gives you the the chance to love, to work, to play, and to look up at the stars.”
What about Fear?
When things are not going our way, it’s the time to stay strong. It is the time not to allow fear to dominate our minds. Successful people do this better than the rest of us. If you allow fear to control your life, your productivity will pay the price. Focus on possibilities, not impossibilities. Your life will be possible. John Burroughs said, “Never let the fear of striking out gets in your way.”
In order to be a productive person, in your life, in your relationships, at work, you have to master yourself. Yes, you have to master yourself. Why is self-mastery so important? Because if you don’t master yourself, who can you master? Nobody! In order to master people, you have to first master yourself. You can master yourself by taking control of your life, by taking control of your thoughts (negative and positive), by controlling your actions. The point here is: “Self-mastery means you are the controller of your life.” John Milton once said, “He who reigns within himself and rules his passions, desires, and fears is more than a king.”
Master your time.
It is virtually impossible to talk about productivity without mentioning time management. A productive person is an effective time manager. Time is the oxygen of our lives. Without it, we are nothing, and we can’t achieve anything of value. So if you want to be really productive, if you want to really do well in life, learn not to waste your precious gold: Time. If you waste your time, you waste your life. If you really value your life, you will value your time. Michael Dell, founder of Dell Computers, said, “You don’t need to be a genius or visionary, or even a college graduate for that matter, to be successful. You must need a framework and a dream.”
Believe in yourself. Never doubt your abilities to get things done, even in the face of obstacle. The good thing about being confident is that it is contagious. When people see that you are a confident person, they will rally around you to get things done. In contrast, if they find out that you are a timid person, you will probably be the only one in the room. Nobody wants to be around a timid boss, manager, a friend, or a co-worker. People want to be around champions, not losers.
Finally, no matter what is going on in the office, make sure that you focus on getting things done. Believe in yourself.
